YOSHIWARA & Jokanji Temple

Yoshiwara red light district

Yoshiwara is the name of the licensed pleasure quarters (Yoshiwara Red-light District) where licensed courtesans gathered on the outskirts of Edo during the Edo period, as well as the name of that area. It was located around the current Senso Temple, in the vicinity of Senzoku 3 and 4-chome in Taito Ward. It lasted until 1958. However, it was devastated by the war, and none of the pre-war brothel buildings remain.

In “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba~Entertainment District Arc~” it served as the setting. Do you remember Tanjiro and the others disguising themselves as women to infiltrate?

These are the current remains of Yoshiwara. There are no traces left whatsoever.

Near the entrance to Yoshiwara, there are still some eateries from that time. Sakura Nabe is a dish that uses horse meat.

Jokanji Temple, also known as the “Throw-in Temple” for prostitutes.

It is said that Jokanji Temple came to be called “Nagekomi Temple” (投込寺), meaning “Nagekomi Temple,” because during the Ansei Great Earthquake in 1855, a large number of courtesans died, and their bodies were thrown into this temple for burial. Additionally, it is said that the bodies of courtesans who died young due to illness were also thrown into this temple. Presently, the Shin-Yoshiwara So-Rei-To (新吉原総霊塔), a memorial tower, stands here, where they are honored. Furthermore, the tomb of the highly ranked courtesan (Oiran, 花魁) Wakamurasaki (若紫) is also located here. Jokanji Temple is a temple with many historical attractions.

Oiran, being popular among the common people, also became a trend in ukiyo-e prints.
